HELPING SCHOOLS BE SAFE AND HEALTHY PLACES TO LEARN AND PLAY

Our office as mandated by WAC 246-366 is required to provide oversight for student safety and health in the school environment.  Our inspectors work to provide a safe and healthy environment for children enrolled in private or public (K – 12) schools by:

  • Reviewing and approving new construction and remodel school plans;
  • Performing Kitchen inspections;
  • Performing Pool Inspections;
  • Providing Technical assistance for local source control for small quantity hazardous waste generators;
  • Responding to school complaints- air, mold, safety, temperature;
  • Monitoring school illness/absenteeism;
  • Performing and reporting on periodic school health and safety inspections.

If you are planning to open a new school, remodel an existing facility, or add a portable building call (360) 728-2235 for more information.
Teacher resources for a safe and healthy classroom:

The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) website and the School Health and Safety Guide are good resources for information about school health and safety.
The Tools for Schools website and the Indoor Air Quality Best Management Practices manual provide information about school indoor air quality.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that schools use Integrated Pesticide Management (IPM) to reduce pesticide risk and exposure to children.
You can learn more about school safety by visiting the School Safety Center—a great resource for parents and school staff.
